Mail-to-SMS

mail-to-sms is a perl script that will convert an email to a SMS.

It features:

• Format the email into the 160-character frame of SMS, optionaly:
  • compacting white spaces (and capitalizing words): "SomeThingLikeThatWhichIsQuiteLedgible";
  • keeping the From: field (full or only the email address);
  • keeping the Subject: field;
  • sending several SMS for one email greater than 160 characters.
• Dispatch the formated message to the operator EMAIL -> SMS gateway, given only the GSM phone number in international format, such uniformalizing SMS addressing.
• Is able to send the message to a Web gateway (needs more work for each operator's web).

It can be used on a UNIX system, by setting up an alias or putting a line in your .forward file such as:
"/local/etc/mail-to-sms +336xxxxxxxx"

This script must be invoked with the following parameters:

mail-to-sms phone-numbe optional_parameters... < message

The parameters may be:

  phone-number    (mandatory)
                  This must be a GSM phone number, in international 
                  format (+<country-code>...).

  --multiple      (optional) 
                  Send big email in several SMS.

  --no-multiple   (optional,default) 
                  Send only the head of the email.


  --compact       (optional,default) 
                  Remove spaces from the email.

  --no-compact    (optional) 
                  Send the email as is.


  --short-from    (optional) 
                  Include in the SMS only the email address, 
                  not the full From:.

  --long-from     (optional,default) 
                  Include in the SMS the full From: field.

  --no-from       (optional) 
                  Don't include in the SMS the From: field.

                  --short-from, --long-from and --no-fromm are exclusive.


  --original-from (optional) 
                  Try to send the message keeping the original From: as
                  sender address on the envelop. This is imply using
                  sendmail directly.

Optional parameters must follow mandatory parameters.

The message text is expected on stdin.

Please, send me information about the other operators. I need for each operator:

• it's name,
• it's country,
• it's allocated ranges of numbers, (for example, SFR has: +33603, and +33609 to +33614),
• how to send the message to it's email-SMS gateway. That may be an email, specifying the transformation to the phone number (for example, when sending to the now defunct gateway of France Telecom, we had to replace +33 by 0, and append @sms.itineris.tm.fr) ; or that may be an URL to a Web Page.
• whether the sender address is automatically inserted into the SMS by the email-to-SMS gateway of the operator.
• whether the email subject is automatically inserted into the SMS by the email-to-SMS gateway of the operator.
